Step 1 · Basic NY notary license — $77

A New York notary course you can finish between shifts.

This is the basic license class — the one you take before you can sit the state exam and get commissioned. The Department of State does not require a prep class. It also fails a large share of walk-ins who treated the License Law like optional reading. This $77 recording is the same instruction Mike Brown has delivered to 70,000+ New Yorkers since 2001 — without the hotel ballroom, the parking, or a live-class calendar.

Already commissioned? The $78 RON / electronic notary upgrade is the next class, not a replacement for this one.

Instructor

Mike Brown

B.S. Occupational Education, Southern Illinois University
M.S. Administration, Central Michigan University

Founder of the New York State Notary Public Association since 2001. Before the classroom he was a senior claims representative and investigator for The Hartford and Aetna in New York, then trial prep manager and investigations supervisor at a New York law firm on the 9/11 sick rescue workers class action. U.S. Navy veteran. That is why the class uses real-world examples and humor on a topic that is otherwise boring legalese. He taught live five-hour classes across the state that students rated 5, then recorded this version because people do not all learn at hotel-room speed. ESL students use the replay. Lawyers and legislators use it to save time — New York lets both hold notary as an additional public office. The recordings stay current when the law changes. The free association video newsletter covers relevant procedure changes so you do not violate the law without knowing it. When New York authorized Remote Online Notary (RON) in 2023, he added the e-notary class as the upgrade after the basic license.

What’s in the class

Not a leaked test. Not a class that tries to cover every state. Seven video sessions that teach New York’s Notary Public License Law the way the 40-question, one-hour exam asks it: definitions, fees, Sunday rules, and the wording they actually use. Quizzes mark what you missed and explain why the almost-right answer is wrong — that is the part a PDF cannot do.

  • 01How the 40-question exam is written — and how it is not a national notary quiz
  • 02Eligibility, residency, and the people the License Law quietly bars
  • 03Certificates: venue, jurat, acknowledgments, and the statement of authority
  • 04Fees, protests, official character, and authentications
  • 05Misconduct, felonies, misdemeanors, and the sentence ladder the exam still asks
  • 06Wills, conveyances, chattel, depositions, and Sunday rules
  • 07Walk-in day, the pass slip, and the $60 commission filing

Who this is for

More than 70%+ of people who study the License Law on their own fail the New York exam. That is why this class exists. Bankers, title clerks, legal assistants, hospital registrars, office managers, people building a mobile notary side income, and ESL students who need spoken English, analogies, and quizzes they can repeat until the weak spots are gone.

It is also for sharp professionals who already know how to work — they take it because it saves time — and for a lot of New York lawyers and state legislators. Under the License Law they may hold the additional public office of Notary Public. They still sit the same 40-question exam. They stay because the teaching uses real-world examples and humor on a topic that is otherwise dry legalese. If you wanted a weekend live seminar, this is not that site — we sell the recorded class and the supplies you need after you pass.

How long it takes, and how long you can watch

Plan on about five hours for the lectures and practice exams. Some people finish in a half day and ace the test. Others replay the weak spots until they are ready. After you pay, the login email usually arrives within ten minutes (check spam). Your email is the user ID; you set the password. Phone, tablet, computer, or the car on a commute.

Access starts at four months. Ask and we add four more at no charge. After those eight months, another four months is $35 — for when work, family, or illness got in the way. Call (347) 427-9091 or email info@notaryeverything.com. Most people never need that extra.

The pass guarantee, stated plainly

If you sit the New York exam within six months of finishing and you fail, send the failed notification from the state. We repeat the class at no charge. Fewer than one percent of students have used that guarantee. We do not refund after access begins because the recordings and PDFs have already been delivered. Employer reimbursement: most requests using our completion certificate are approved.

Lifetime association membership rides with the class. New York does not require continuing education. The real risk is a procedure change you never hear about, then a violation you did not mean to make. We keep the recordings updated, and we send a free New York State Notary Public Association video newsletter every month on those relevant changes (sooner if the law moves). Phone hotline: (347) 427-9091. No second invoice.

Stay current so you do not break a rule you never saw

The $77 class is not a frozen 2001 tape. When New York changes the rules, the videos get updated. After you pass, you still need to know. Previously licensed notaries miss journal rules, RON, and fee changes because nobody told them. The monthly video newsletter is how we tell you — free with the class, for life.

What this class is not

It is not the state exam, not a government portal, and not a Remote Online Notary (RON) upgrade — that is a separate e-notary class after you are already commissioned. You still pay the state $15 to test and $60 to file. You still pick a date on dos.ny.gov. We prepare you so those two payments are not wasted.
